What’s the trait you value most about yourself?
I was raised by a mother who did all her chores meticulously and a father who applied military discipline in our upbringing. We were always trained to think ahead of our steps and keep a plan B,C or even D. Failure was neither permitted nor forgiven. This rigidness made me carry the same stuff forward when I became a parent in the assumption of good parenting. Soon I realised how it snatched away innocent moments of randomness, raw spontaneous happiness. So slowly I freed myself from the myth of the good parent. I was able to allow myself to fail and embrace it completely and talk openly about it with my kids. They never needed a perfect parent. All they needed was the one who was relatable, emotionally available and loving. Being able to be the prototype, breaking the chain of perfection in parenting and accepting the raw, unfiltered, live-in-the-moment kinda life is my flex now.
