Tell us about a time when you felt out of place.
That’s a heartbreak no one prepares you for. The more my teenagers grow, despite having a great bond with them I feel my presence in their world is shrinking-fast. They don’t say it but I can feel it as we mothers have spent a lifetime picking up cues and hints. We have decoded their body movements and silent looks knowing what’s going on for years now. It’s a mixed emotion. Part of me can’t be happier to see them becoming independent, but as a mother, it breaks my heart too that soon I might become irrelevant having no references to their inside jokes, their secret eye signals. And it’s ok. That’s the law of nature. They are a part of me, and they always will be. Even when I’m not a part of their lives.
